Donors and Stars Collide at the Chicago International Film Festival

CITA La BambaDonors and friends of Columbia College Chicago had several opportunities to be among the stars at the 2012 Chicago International Film Festival (CIFF) in October.

Made possible through our fourth year as a Presenting Partner at CIFF, the Columbia College community was hosted on opening night for a well-attended reception at the Harris Theatre. Our guests were treated to orchestra-section seating for the world premiere of “Stand Up Guys.” Prior to that, attendees were able to view the red carpet arrivals of stars Al Pacino, Christopher Walken, Jon Bon Jovi and Alan Arkin as well as director Fisher Stevens.

Our annual Columbia Night at CIFF played a dual role as the start of this academic year’s Conversations in the Arts series centered on a reunion of the stars from the 1987 Ritchie Valens biopic “La Bamba.” Actors Lou Diamond Phillips, Esai Morales and Elizabeth Peña reunited in Chicago for the first time since the film’s debut 25 years ago. The three stars mingled with a select group of Columbia College friends and supporters in an intimate reception that started with our own red carpet photos complete with cascade of flashes from a crowd of CIFF paparazzi at the AMC River East.

A larger group of supporters was invited to the private Conversation in the Arts presentation with the three stars later that evening where they discussed auditioning for the film that made stars of them. The trio also discussed their careers and role choices since the 1980s and the current climate in Hollywood for Latino roles, including advice for up-and-coming actors in training today. And, of course, they signed autographs and took more photos with fans.
